The era of megafires

The fires are bigger, hotter and harder to stop.

Deeper droughts, longer seasons and denser fuel have pushed wildfire past the limits ground and air crews were built for. The largest fires now generate their own weather, throw embers for kilometres and keep burning through the night, when fire once lay down. A small number of these events does most of the harm.

Why control fails

Almost every fire is caught. The few that escape are not.

Crews stop the vast majority of ignitions during initial attack. The danger is the rare fire that breaks away under extreme wind and drought. Once it crosses that threshold, conventional tankers and ground teams can slow it but rarely stop it. These are the fires that level towns and exhaust a whole season's resources.

Fire Free Forests operates a fleet of heavy aerial firefighting systems built on converted Boeing 767 wide-body aircraft. Each one carries a retardant load far beyond conventional tankers and reaches a fire front fast, wherever it is deployed. It is a last line of defense: not a replacement for the crews already in the field, but the force that arrives once a fire crosses the threshold and everything else is losing ground.

Technology & system

The aircraft is one layer. Around it, Fire Free Forests integrates drones, satellite intelligence, prediction and optimization, and real-time command and control, so detection, targeting and suppression act as a single system. It continuously determines where each aircraft should intervene to maximize the probability of containing the fire. The mission and avionics systems are developed with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), our technology partner.
